TIFF is back Toronto, and it’s bringing with it all the excitement it has been known for Pre-COVID and then some!
We reached out to TIFF because as a women’s magazine we were interested in their support of women in the entertainment industry. Since 2017, TIFF has been running their “Share Her Journey” campaign. “Share Her Journey began in 2017 as a five-year campaign committed to addressing gender parity and championing women in front of and behind the camera, both year-round and during the Toronto International Film Festival. It has since evolved into a permanent TIFF initiative, supporting creators at every stage of their professional journey” (TIFF “Share Her Journey” media release).
The numbers back up the need for this movement:
- Of the top-grossing 51 films of 2021, only 12.7% of the 55 directors involved in creating those films were women — only three of whom were women of colour.
- Of the top-grossing 100 films from of 2021, only 11 had a woman or girl of colour as their protagonist.
- In 2021, only 7% of movies featured more women than men, and only 8% featured equal numbers of men and women. (TIFF: Data collected by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, San Diego State University. Sources here and here.)
TIFF has set out to change these numbers by making sure a 50/50 gender spilt exists in Talent Development Initiatives. As well, 64% of the speakers at the “Industry Conference” of 2021 were women, proving that things are flowing in a positive direction. However, more support and funding are needed to keep the momentum going.
In this video Jennifer Baichwal, a Canadian Filmmaker and Share Her Journey Ambassador, talks more about the importance behind the movement from a filmmaker’s point of view:
To show your support, you can watch the films by female directors. These are listed in the drop-down menu shown in this link and can been found by scrolling across to “Directed by Women”. https://www.tiff.net/films
